A reminder to UST operators to regularly inspect and maintain your spill buckets. Jim Chenard, one of our LSRPs and our Hydrogeology Manager, tells the story… “On a recent project in upstate NY, we had to supervise the removal and safe disposal of over 900 tons of impacted soil and remediate contaminated groundwater due to a couple of leaking spill buckets. During what should have been a straightforward Environmental Site Assessment for a gas station property transfer, we found that two of the four USTs on the site had badly rusted and perforated single wall steel spill buckets that had been leaking through the gravel surrounding the tanks and into the underlying soils and groundwater for a very long time. 900 tons of gasoline contaminated soil worth of time. Ironically, when we pulled the tanks out of the ground to access the impacted areas beneath them, all four were found to be perfectly intact and usable. Generally, spill buckets don’t last as long as tanks do, so regular inspection and maintenance becomes a little more critical. Even though they are the entry point for anything that enters the tanks, buckets are frequently overlooked in the overall tank system. Debris and water accumulation in the buckets can drastically reduce their usable lifespan. Failure to maintain the spill bucket in accordance with regulations can be as costly as having a failure of a tank system, however, it can be more insidious as it occurs slowly over time.” The takeaway from this story is to maintain your entire UST system in accordance with local and state regulations and if practicable, consider upgrading to newer double wall stainless steel or plastic spill buckets. Still in Baltimore… This wooded 4 acre mound on the property turned out to be a drum burial site. We don’t know how many, we don’t know the contents, and (except for the few visible ones) we don’t know the condition of the drums. But we will. And the neighbors are curious. A little later in the season, we’ll be on site working alongside and managing a team of specialized contractors to fully assess and safely remediate that area. In the meantime, we’re preparing and submitting the pile of permit applications to ensure regulatory compliance before, during, and after the investigation and cleanup. We’re also developing a comprehensive Drum Investigation Work Plan to make certain that the worksite and the environment remain safe, and that the community is protected from any possible impact. This will be an interesting project to talk about as it progresses. In Baltimore, in the pouring cold rain, with gale force wind gusts…   Our preliminary investigation of this 20-acre industrial property identified some areas of concern that needed a closer look, so our team is back on site to take samples, identify and characterize any soil or air pollutants, and delineate the edges and extent of the contamination.   Soil core samples were taken from various locations and depths (typically around 15 feet) around the site and preliminary testing is done on site with a photoionization detector (PID) to roughly determine the presence of contaminants before the cores are prepared for further lab analysis.   The investigation is ongoing, and the team will be staying there for a few more days to carry out indoor air and soil gas sampling in buildings and structures across the site.   When the sampling is finished and the lab reports are delivered, we’ll map the results and produce a detailed visualization of the composition and extent of the contamination plume. With that information, we'll be fully prepared to deliver actionable, data supported remediation recommendations to the client.   Our clients depend on us to develop and execute a remediation strategy that’s appropriate to the site, that reaches the defined goals, that meets regulatory requirements, is within their budget and timeline, and that restores value to their property.
